Viv writes:
Penny farthings - 'ordinaries', and more modern bicycles - 'safeties' -
outside old Bear Cross Inn.
People with bikes unknown. In doorway of Inn are
my ggrandfather, Edwin LANE, and his wife Elizabeth nee WOODROW. I know it's
him because of his parti-coloured beard. He died Sept 1894, so carte is
before then.
Edwin was a wheelwright and the beer retailer from c 1884. Many
beer retailers had other jobs. Elizabeth took over after Edwin died, and
then their youngest son, Frank, was beer retailer until WW1.
Augustus JOHN reputed by local historian to have drunk here when Frank was
beer retailer.
Photographer unknown. Nothing left on back.
