John Smeaton (1724 - 1794)
Civil engineer born in Austhorpe, West Yorkshire, England, UK. Fellow of the Royal Society 1753, Copley medal for research into mechanics of water wheels and windmills. Designed 3rd Eddystone lighthouse (1756-9) and Ramsgate Harbour (1774). The Forth and Clyde Canal. Bridges at Coldstream and Perth.
