I have just come across your website, which is excellent by the way, and noticed The Seymour Album, this mentions a ERNEST A. LEAL and a ALICE LEAL, Ernest is Ernest Augustus Leal, he had a sister Alice, their brother George Leal is my great-grandfather, Leal is my mothers maiden name.

Thank you so much for the copy [of the certificate] you sent, this is really interesting because Ernest Leal was not a Teacher, he worked as a Civil Servant for the Department of Trade in the Fraud Squad, he was even honoured with a MBE for his work, he did also once own a Cinema in London, but not sure where.

However his sister Alice Leal was a Teacher, but where she taught I do not know.   The name Leighton rings a bell and this might lead to a connection perhaps to where Leighton College may of been.

Ernest and Alice along with other Leal family members are on the 1891 Census living in Leighton Crescent, St Pancras, perhaps the college is near this.   In the late 1890's Ernest and Alice both lived in the St Pancras area, by the early 1900's both had moved to the Catford, Lewisham area of south London.

I'm not sure if this might be just a coincedence but Ernest and Alice's brother George Leal (my great grandfather) George married a Cecilia Hall, Cecilia had a brother Henry Hall, and Henry had a son whom he gave the middle name Seymour.   Both the Leal and Hall families are from the Islington area.

Reply by Roger:
The album was a prize at school given to Miss Seymour, this was probably a private girls school and may well have been a large house in Leighton Crescent. If so the group photo of the girls in the garden should be the very same place - further there is a lady in the photo with a child on her lap who could I guess just about be Alice and perhaps her mother on the other side.

Thank you for a copy of the photo, I do not recognise any of the children, however the young woman with the little girl on her lap, I would think is Alice Leal, the older woman could be her mother Charlotte, something very familiar about her face.
